I designed the Rochester specifically for Mr Waldron the reason I can recall his name so readily after 15 years is that he repeatedly asked over several months to build him a smaller cote, his problem being that the only access to his walled garden was via his house. Finally relenting we built his dovecote and arranged to deliver and erect it. The Waldron's lived in the ancient part of the Rochester. The site for the Dovecote was a cobbled court yard with 800 yrs of compacted rubble as a footing. Cindy and I spent hours chipping away until finally excavating the 3ft deep hole which was our goal. Erecting the cote we summoned the customers for a site meeting. All being approved the Waldrons retired to the house and we started to fill the hole. A tap on the widow and a raised hand from inside signaled us to stop. On returning to the house in became apparent that the cote barred their view of the Cathedral. Apologetic they were but adamant also that we had to move it, " but only a few feet". After filling in hole number one and picking at another 800 years of builder's rubble for hole two we finally moved the cote . The only merit in having a bad day is if you learn by the experience. When we erect a cote now we have a silhouette which is held aloft so the customer can view the cote from every aspect before we dig one hole let alone two. The Rochester is a six sided cote, with two floors of three bays , so housing six pairs of birds.
